MERGING LEGAL STRATEGIES WITH BUSINESS OBJECTIVES

SPLG strives to offer clients a unique combination of legal resources and business expertise to design and manage its intellectual property strategy and overall business goals and objectives. To gain a better understanding of how a client’s products, services and intellectual property compare to the profit/loss centers, SPLG attorneys will analyze the client’s portfolio of products and services, then relate these products/services to the client’s intellectual property protection. This multi-disciplinary approach helps clients meet their business objectives and promote future growth.

An effective intellectual property strategy requires a team with technical, business and legal expertise. Frequently, SPLG leads brainstorming sessions with engineering, marketing and management teams in an effort to capture early stage technology and file potentially “pioneering” patent applications. Realizing that employee time and resources are limited in today’s business environment, it is important to maximize the return on brainstorming sessions, while minimizing the demand on team members.

SPLG has developed tools to help clients assess intellectual property forecasting and market projections. These tools are used, in conjunction with brainstorming sessions, to encourage engineering teams to “think outside of the box”. Often engineers have many great ideas that they consider too early in development to bring to the attention of the intellectual property department. In these sessions, engineers are encouraged to think 3, 5 and 10 years into the future in order to predict what features may be desirable and what technologies may become available, developing leverage for commercial advantage.
